Hello,
could you explain me what the high gore visual realism setting does ?
...you can find it under historical/realism.
Also would it be safe to turn all those options on while playing AEP and BOE?
cheers

Hi gore doesn't do much. There are only 3 or 4 planes who's damage model includes gore effects.
With that setting on, the gore effects are enabled and you will see blood on the pilot/crew of the target airplane when they are dead or injured if the target is one of those few that has the gore damage model components.
As far as I remember the planes that have it are He-111, one of the 109F models and one of the flying boats.

It shouldn't affect frame rates at all, it's only a texture swap.

In the original IL-2 when the pilots or crews of He.111, Bf.109 F-4 and Beriev MBR-2 were injured or killed, you would see splatters of blood on the canopies, if high gore was enabled (see attached screenshot from IL-2 original version).
The option seems to have become non-functional in FB, which makes me think the game was somewhat "sanitized", maybe in order to avoid possible complaints from horrified parents... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

I understand the desire to have the high gore option. I didn't know it wasn't working due to not wanting it for myself. I'd rather see the developers spend their time fixing other things. As far as the sanitized thing goes; in reality, everything seemed very steril up at 20,000 feet. You didn't get to see the gore. You were lucky to see the plane at all, much less what was in it. I was a medic in the U.S. Army between 1976 and 1979. I've seen enough gore and any comic book imitation of the same, smacks of disrespect towards those who served, suffered and died during WWII or anywhere else. I remember when they were testing a new parachute design and a corner folded on the guy using it when deployed. This put him in a high g-force spin and he immediatley passed out. None of us watched him burn in. There was nothing to see. Unlike in the movies, the injuries were mostly internal. One guy had to watch though, so we could respond as quickly as possible in case he survived the collision with the ground. That person was the head company medic (me). Yes, it was a "Dirty Harry" job, but someone had to do it. If high gore is realistically used, there won't be much to see; I can assure you of this due to my personal and unfortunately extensive experience with real world "high gore". If there is consitently something to see, then it is as they say in these game rooms "overmodelled". Still, I support the option, it's just a very low priority for me and I think most players I deal with online.

I am not a great fan of gore myself, but I wonder why it was taken away without notice, and the whole thing seems a bit too pc for my liking.
Realism-wise, I think that anyone hit by a 20 mm HE shell would be a messy sight, even if I am more than thankful I've never had a direct experience of the visual effects of such an occurrence.
Said that, I don't think that gore effects would be a lack of respect for those who fought WW2, if they are intended to enhance the realism of the sim, but of course this is only my personal opinion.

According to screenshots I've seen, it hasn't been taken away, it's just become less blatant (and more realistically rendered). Haven't tried it myself though.

I guess it would hard to spot any 'blood' in real life from taht distance wouldn't it?
so I reckon if they reduced it a bit It won't hurt anybody...

Hmm, I don't see what difference it would make either way, what would be the point in seeing the windows turn red? Unless sometimes the pilot migh "play dead" until you give up, other than that no need.
IIRC Germany has some strict game ratings rules and if human blood is apparent then the game gets an automatic older rating.

Don't you achieve the same effect by changing the highgore=? setting in the conf file?
Right now mine is set at highgore=1 and I fly 111's a lot. Next time I'll use shift+f2 to check it from outside.
I've never been in a war, but I have been in a couple of severe car accidents with lots of blood, and lots of bloody fights in my younger testosterony days.
I like the blood effect.
And I really like shooting down aircraft piloted by real people online.
