I've got very mixed feelings about this whole thing, and I can see from scanning the forums here, that in the 48-odd hours since release in the UK/Europe, there's not been a lot of noise over this, or at least as much as I might have thought.

I got my Far Cry on Friday by trading in a load of PS2 games at GAME (nee EB), so I'm pretty much stuck with GAME for all further options.

It seems that it's DVD only in the UK, while other European countries have the choice. Well, at first I paniced about not having a DVD drive. Then I did some research and saw that the price of a bare-minimun 16x DVD ROM drive is only about twenty quid.

So, on Monday, I'm off to buy one (as Amazon didn't like my credit card! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif). Assuming, that is, that the cheques I deposited on Friday have cleared. The only real problem now is doing all this without my lovely wife (ahem) finding out, as we're pretty strapped right now.

Well, frankly, I can't wait to get playing, the extra hassle is well worth it (assuming it will install *and* play!), but I can't help resenting the fact that NOT A WORD was said about this whole DVD/CD thing prior to release. Not on any of the sites, not in the gaming press (that I saw), nor anywhere else (where else?). Bit strange, if you ask me. *sigh*

Indeed! I have seen a single mention in the games press (I think it was in C&VG or GamesTM). It is unforgivable to not release a CD version in the UK. I fortunately have a DVD drive but there are still many people who do not. It looks as though the screw britain campaign is happening on PC as well as consoles now. Before we know it we will not get releases until 6 months after the US just like the consoles.

You know it's funny that there are lot of people pissed in the US that they only released the CD version here.

5 CDs is a pain in the butt, even if you just need them for the install.

It would have been nice for them to release both versions in both regions. However, I can see how that would be a organizational nightmare, so I can't really blame them.

Well, the dvd problem is more of a problem with silly copy protection schemes that are used. Yes, I realize that software has to be protected somehow, but those who want to steal the game are going to get it honestly. Safedisc protection is not a true effective means of stopping piracy.

As for CD's vs DVD's, certain CD drives have just as many problems with the CD protection as the DVD has with the DVD protection.

And I'm one of those people who was upset that ubi made a terrible choice with only releasing a CD version here in the USA. It's about time to go DVD, and honestly, for those who state that sales will be lost going only DVD in Europe, just as many people will refuse to buy the game on CD. Granted, I had to spend more, but I did import the game on DVD.

That's funny. I noticed numerous threads asking this question before release. I knew that the game was coming to the USA in CD-Rom form and that the DVD will be released in UK. Should have done a bit more research.

here in Denmark, and probably the hole of scandinavia there is also only the DVD version for sale. And since I'm one of the many who got a DVD drive that can't read the disc I'm pretty pissed too. Wish I could have the CD version.

Yeah, right. At least the people who have only CDROMS can get the game installed and then whine about it not playing. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

The fact that the UK release would be DVD and the US release would be CD was discussed on this forum several weeks prior to release.

Yeah, but it could be more realistic. When you die, the game should be deleted from your hard drive and your serial number permanently invalidated.

I'm glad that Far Cry is released on DVD.
I wish they hadn't made a cd version.
Sure it would be a pain if you didn't have a DVD drive, but still...
It would be a way to push the market forward.
I don't like games that come on more than one disk...

The upcoming Unreal Engine 3.0 won't support any non dx9 graphics card... They are simply moving on and not wasting time and energy on obsolete hardware...

I hope to see alot more games that focuses on realism and gameplay instead of compatibility.

It's obvious that the DVD compatibility issue is causing huge problems for some users - I have to wait 8 minutes for my drive to read the DVD before I can install or play. UT2004 is on DVD and my drive read it fine.

So this mess should be mentioned on the FarCry-TheGame website, on the main page as a piece of news to inform customers of the problem.

UbiSoft know about the problem, maybe they just don't want to risk hurting sales or making themselves look stupid?

Well stupid you are so put it on the website and at least potential (or new) buyers will know of the problem straight away without having to read through hundreds of forum posts.

Yes we aren´t living in the ´90:s at all and there isn´t really a cost issue at hand. DVD:s has cost 20$ for months and used you get pretty much for free.

And all internet stores I have looked in says it´s DVD or CD-ROM.

So any game that consists of 3 discs or more should really be on DVD. Saves money for the developers too. It cost less produce 1 DVD then 3 CD-Roms so DVD:s are definiatly the future.

And another nice thing I didn´t even have to put my serial key in. Just start the install go away and then when I come back it´s finished.

Yeah, that's great, I can dig that. Well, it seems most of the drive issues concern LG units, so it's a cheap LiteOn for me! Hopefully, you won't hear from me again with DVD issues. Here's hoping.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
