Ok, i have recorded a demo but the playback doesnt work. I have located the file and copied it for safe keeping, is there any way to play it by renaming to "demo.AVI" etc and play it on windows media player?
Thanx

No, that's not possible. You need to use a 3rd party capture program like FRAPS to record movies of RvS gameplay.

oooook, is there anyway to CONVERT them?
XyZspineZyX

There is NO way on converting them. They are not .mpegs or .avi's in some sort of compression....they are a different type of file all together.
I've got a pile of .dem files kicking around too. So far UBI hasn't commented on providing a playback feature for the demos.
I really really wish they would provide us with a method of playing them back because I think they'd be a great way of detecting cheaters that PB misses.

You could try putting your demo file into the directory of another game that uses the unreal engine... But note that the demo files usually run IN-GAME which means you'd have to somehow move all the texture files into the game also... and maybe have to put in all the model files, quite possibly you might even have to put in the map files...
IF it's worth a try... try it...
Also... Can you play the demo inside of RVS?

Use virtualdub to convert/compress whatever, into divx

nope, (i do sometimes) but i was trying out the ingame stuff first and oh:

look at the part about half life, does this mean half life can record and play?

The ingame recording will make a file for playback in the game only (because it needs the engine, the sounds etc.)
RvS can't play the recording, so you have to record it in fraps if you want to see anything

Its a limitation in the game, so a patch wont fix it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I want Demo Recording/Playback!!
Ok so what is actually a feasible way of recording movies in RVS. Fraps is a bigtime FPS killer and the movies are friggin huge, like 50MB for 15seconds running on half size and 15fps.

Here's what I think. UBI Soft purchased the Unreal Engine. Part of the Engine was the demo record playback feature. Ubisoft didn't purchase the demo record feature, and therefore is not allowed to use it. Ubisoft will not spend more money to purchase the "demo record/playback feature".
The only viable solution is for someone who is very smart at programming to figure out a way / write a mod / program an interface to use the "unlicensed" features of the Unreal Engine that are already there! I'm sure all they did was modify it a little to make it unusable, so probably it just has to be modified back.
If you're interested in this project, stop by http://forums.turksheadclan.net, as [THC]Daver will be project leading this.

YOu could get a TV card, record to VCR and then record back to the computer. That would get rid of any framerate loss and you could compress the footage to something reasonable.

Or just upgrade your old comp so you can play while recording with fraps .. It dont work on a 300mhz cpu you know .... baaaah!

ok then is it possible to copy and paste the demo file into half life DIR, paste all the engine files(or whatever) +sounds etc into the right dir and play it back using half life? or does half life use a different engine?

What do you consider a "decent" computer? I've got a pretty kickass system (posted specs here many times 80-140 FPS playing - never below about 50FPS) and I get about 20 FPS while playing and recording.....which is fine for the movie but pretty tough to play.....of course that was Full Resolution (1024x768 and everything maxed) and recording the audio.
I'll do some tests and see what reasonable....resolutions, RvS game settings, etc.
Oh...and a 22 second file I recorded last night was 453 megs. Imagine trying to record a match or something. LOL.

On a normal 'recording day' I'll use about 40-60 gigs for different recordings. Then slap it in Premiere, export and convert to DivX...
Anyways, 800x600 works perfect while recording with fraps, with minimum fps loss. So go try that

I use hypercam, seems to have a 800/600 30 min clip to about 150 megs. And it doesnt kill frames at all depending on what encoder u use.

Hypercam is great, but the codec it uses is not great if you plan on doing any editing of the movie..
