today a Chechen woman tried to bring a bag filled with explosives inside a cafe in Moscow. security stopped her at the door and wouldnt let her inside, she began threatening to blow up the place- the guards confiscated the bag, put it against a wall and surrounded it with flack jackets, they arrested the 25-year old Chechen. when police arrived, they first tried to use a robot to detonate the bomb:

it didnt explode. they then had to send in a explosive expert and unfortunately the bomb detonated while he was defusing it. apperently this same explosives expert was at the scene of last weeks suicide bombings and was able to defuse one of the bombs that didnt go off.

do you have a link to the story?

he died, here is the CNN link: http://edition.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/07/10/moscow.bomb/index.html

the Russian news sites are now theorizing that it was a remote control bomb, because it didnt explode when the robot was messing with it, it didnt explode when they shot it with a water canon, and it only exploded when the bomb expert approached it.

I'm speechless. That is horrible.

Mercifully, the shockwave of high-explosive travels faster than the human nervous system can transmit signals, so he didn't feel a thing.

I'm speechless. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Why didn't they just try exploding it?

The bomb-disposal robot fires a high-pressure jet of water and sand which is capable of blasting through concrete. This usually makes such a mess of the bomb that is it is inoperable. This WAS attempted and, sadly, failed.

What about using a second explosive device to blow up the bomb in a controlled manner?

That woudl likely cause sympathetic detonation (the shockwave of the "Second device" would cause the "first device" to explode). When the nature of the explosive devce is unknown (is it home-made fertiliser or something far more powerful? Is it studded with nails? Is is laced with chemical agents?) it is unwise to "set it off" because explosions are NEVER controlled, only circumstances.

I see your point but in this case it would not have mattered.

here is the same expolsives expert disarming an unexploded bomb from the July 5th suicide bombings in Moscow:

It's a shame that they couldn't detonate it remotely or that the water jet didn't work. I thought typically those things decimate the electronics of a bomb.

The liklihood of shrapnel is high. An explosion will send a nail or screw over 800m at head-splitting velocity. That represents an unacceptable degree of risk to the public, never mind the cost of damage incurred to property.

US teams have been experimenting with Kevlar tents filled with high-density foam to control an explosion along with any shrapnel. Soviet squads are massively over-worked and have little specialist equipment.

God have mercy on that brave man's soul.

They already tried to detonate it with the robot. So perhaps it wouldn't have been such a bad idea to maybe use a small strip of prima cord, or a small charge, like those used to shatter windows prior to a sniper firing a shot.

I'm not second guessing them, I'm sure they followed standard procedures, just an idea of how that could have been averted.

It must take a real special kind of person to want to do that guy's job. I know they are bigger men than I.

the moscow police have released the interegation information from the captured bomber. she said that the original target was supposed to be the Moscow McDonalds (one of the busiest in the world) but she got lost and couldnt find it, she went into a different restaurant, pressed the button to detonate the bomb, but nothing happened, she kept pressing it and nothing happened again, thats when she tried to go to a different one and thats where they caught her. the police figure that the spring that was on the detonator (or somehting like that im not a bomb expert) got jammed, and got unjamed when the officer started working with it and thats when it detonated, just bad luck i guess cause it didnt unjam when the robot touched it and when they shot it with a hydro canon.

Dude... that was a tad bit graphic. Looks pretty tragic. Those fat'ol suits they wear should've keep him alive. But just like the movies... they're useless. Poor Boi.
